“Fitness has always been central to my life, especially having had parents who were both natural athletes,” says BG Capital Group Chairman Bobby Genovese. “Skiing, horseback riding, tennis, golf — our entire family played these sports from the time we could walk,” said Genovese.
Although already an accomplished equestrian, in his late 30s Genovese tried his hand at polo, which proved to be a natural fit. He quickly brought his winning touch from the BG Capital Group boardroom to the polo fields, building one of North America’s top-ranked teams. His affinity for the game led to the founding of Vancouver International Polo and the debut of Boca Raton’s Royal Palm Polo club’s first new medium- and high-goal team in more than 20 years.
VIP was Vancouver’s first team in more than two decades to clinch the prestigious Canadian Open. From the moment the team donned their distinctive green and white uniforms they caught the attention of spectators, polo aficionados and the local and international press for their accomplished level of play.
In their first year, they competed in Royal Palm Polo’s 14-goal Hartman League, which they won with a perfect 4-0 record. It was an unprecedented feat for a start-up team in the club’s 25-year history.
Two years later, they earned a place in the history books as Vancouver’s first team in more than two decades to clinch the prestigious Canadian Open, followed by taking top honors at the Toronto Invitational for three consecutive years. When asked about the team’s meteoric rise to the international level after only their second competitive year, Genovese noted: “We’re a young, aggressive group of thirty-something guys who are out to prove we’re worth another look.”
